Tom and Jerry
America's forgotten Christmas cocktail.
Invented in the 1800s and once a staple of every holiday gathering, this rich, frothy drink was the festive favorite before eggnog stole the spotlight. A cozy mix of warm milk (or water), aged spirits, and a fluffy spiced batter, the Tom & Jerry is holiday cheer in a mug. It’s a really, really happy drink. And I feel now more than ever we need happiness.
the drink:
In a mug, combine 2 oz of batter and 2 oz of the liquor of your choice. I prefer 1 oz bourbon/1oz rum. Traditionally it’s made with brandy and rum. Fill with hot milk, stir vigorously until well blended or the batter will curdle.

Tom and Jerry cont…
First, you need to make the batter!
6 large eggs
½ tsp ground nutmeg
½ tsp ground cloves
½ tsp ground cinnamon
½ tsp ground allspice
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp cream of tartar
2 ¼ cups pure cane sugar
1 oz spiced rum
1 oz bourbon
warm milkthe batter:
Separate the eggs, placing the egg whites in one mixing bowl, and the yolks in a separate mixing bowl. In the bowl with the egg whites add the cream of tartar. Beat until they form stiff peaks. In the bowl with the yolks beat together the vanilla extract, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, and nutmeg. Slowly mix in the sugar. When the mixture is completely liquid, fold it into the whites.
